Benefits of Bone Broth

By the Acuworx Team

Have you gone through the phases of quarantine sourdough starters, whipping dalgona coffee, and baking banana bread? Well… I would like to introduce a new recipe to try, BONE BROTH! Many of my patients know that I endlessly recommend bone broth as “liquid gold” for the body.  I grew up drinking bone broth-based soups throughout my childhood.  I often watched my mother spend hours slow cooking bones, and it’s deeply ingrained in my culture to drink bone broth. Especially during the fall and winter. As a great base for many delicious soups and stews, it’s densely packed with nutrients the body needs to heal from injuries and strengthen the body’s structure.

The best bone broth turns into gel in the fridge and melts down on the stove. That means it’s full of protein, gelatin, and collagen. Collagen is found in the connective tissue in the body. Connective tissue known as muscle, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, spinal discs, bones…And did you know that blood is also a connective tissue? Collagen builds the structures of the blood, the layers of our cells, and the matrix that cells travel through. Think of it like “glue.” When the body is injured, collagen plays an important role in healing.

Situations where bone both is helpful:

  • Recovery after a workout

  • Muscle ache and pain, sprains, ligament tears, tendonitis, arthritis, broken bones

  • Preparing for pregnancy, expectant mothers, and postpartum mothers

  • Post surgical procedures

  • Recovering from a cold, flu, or infection

  • Repairing gut lining

  • Brittle hair, weak nails, thin skin

My lazy recipe is to throw everything into a slow cooker!

Ingredients:

  • 2-3lbs of Bone in Beef shank and Beef/Pork neck bones

  • 1 onion

  • 1- 1.5 inch chunk of ginger, peeled

  • 1 piece of star anise

  • 4 pieces of cloves

  • 1 piece of cinnamon

  • 2 bay leaves

  • 1 whole garlic bulb

  • 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar

  • Salt to taste

Steps:

  1. Soak the bones in cold water for 20 minutes to remove some of the blood

  2. Roast the bones in air fryer at 400 F for 20 minutes for extra flavor

  3. Place all the ingredients in a slow cooker or a large pot and fill the entire pot with water

  4. Slow cook overnight 8-24 hours on low

  5. Use as base for other soups and stews

Or if cooking is not your thing, high quality bone broth can be found easily at  Darke Pines & Busy Bee Organics

ENJOY!
